A new tagging effort involving anglers hopes to start filling in some of the many large gaps in scientists' knowledge of the elusive permit an effort to collect vital data about the heath of permit populations, migratory/spawning patterns and more. The tagging program kicked off during the March Merkin Permit Tournament in the Florida Keys.
Aaron Adams, president of BTT, says there has never been a stock assessment of permit in Florida. Noting that the data gathered by tag recoveries will impact management strategies, Costa vice president of marketing Al Perkinson says, "We want to help form policy that protects and conserves permit for our children and grandchildren to enjoy."

Winninq Wahoo Tip Scores Fin-Nor Reel
The wahoo contest, part of Sport Fishing's ongoing, online game-fish-tips contest, offered a number of insightful tips to up your odds for that species. The winning tip came from Steve Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida:
The standard motto while highspeed trolling for wahoo is this: When you hook up, you should always go back over the same area at least a couple of times, as
3" Ghost Shrimp
Qutfishes and Outlasts live bait.
5" Jerk Shad

there are usually more around — at least that's standard procedure. My tip is to set up your regular pattern of high-speed trolling, and when you hook up, mark the spot on your machine. Then come back to it and live-bait the heck out of it. Or you can just start your live-baiting in an area were you are sure there are wahoo. Tinker mackerel, large cigar minnows and blue runners are perfect for this. The technique makes for great fights, as you don't need the heavier-tackle trolling, demands. You can fight with big spinning [gear]. Just live-bait 'em like you were kingfishing. You are just as apt to catch the biggest fish of the school this way; many giant wahoo have been incidentally caught by kingfishermen while live-baiting. For example, late last November a good number of huge wahoo were hooked and landed by boats out of Biioxi [Mississippi] slow-trolling live runners and generally on tackle no heavier than 20 to 25 pounds, with some fish approaching 90 pounds. Try it next time — you may be pleasantly surprised. Take advantage of other anglers' secrets tor catching popular game fish and share your own — plus, put yourself in the running to win a great
